Amongst Myselves is Steve Roberts of Australia. He was first drawn into electronic and atmospheric music by Tangerine Dream's "Atem" and "Alpha Centauri." His journey continued in the '90s with influences from Future Sound of London, Steve Roach, Robert Rich and Aphex Twin, and Brian and Roger Eno. Coupled with advances in computer-based synths, he took a great interest in the ambient.

After releasing a new-age styled album 1999, it was Steve's more ambient follow up "Still Life" in 2001 from which "Ultima Thule" radio chose a track to use for theme music.

Steve's music has appeared on compilations by AquaFM and Ultima Thule alongside Steve Roach, Robert Rich, Tim Story and Numina. Other appearances include EuCuE Concert Series XXVII of electro-accoustic concerts and Roger Mills' project "Idea of South" sound installation at the Loop Gallery in Newcastle.

"Fragments" is a very ambient remix of his previous three albums and was nominated for "Best Electronic" and "Best Ambient" album for 2010 in the annual Zone Music awards.

Cyberchump is the electro-organic duo of Jim Skeel and Mark G.E. They explore aural soundscapes of rhythm and moment. Subterrainian atmospherics give way to driving space melodies, at once a mix of science beats, ambient texture, and cinematic themes.

The duo's music evokes place, time, and mood, utilizing the studio as an instrument to enhance traditional organic instruments. Jim tends to focus on electric guitar and keyboards. Mark tends to work with bass and keyboards.

They count Brian Eno, Harold Budd, and Robert Fripp among their influences. Their interests include cinema, exploration, and moving forward.

Thomas Park has been involved with music for his entire life. He was trained in classical and jazz music as a teenager and played the trombone and piano. His listening habits changed in the late 1980s when Thomas became interested in electronic music. After several years of writing techno as the band AutoCad, Thomas was fortunate enough to collaborate with Robin Storey of Rapoon. This project helped Thomas to evolve into the ambient / drone band Mystified. Mystified has found considerable success, both through online and physical releases, and is known for being proficient, creative and prolific.

The music of Mystified is mainly of an atmospheric nature. Sometimes for Thomas, less is more, making his music ideal for listening while working, sleeping or doing other things. The music of Mystified especially explores texture, consistency, and a type of variety that could be called subtle. This is not the utopian ambient of the typical soundscape artist. It is serious music for serious people.

Mystified music has found many purposes, including scores for films, online and terrestrial radio shows, festivals of aesthetic, political, and other varieties, informational CD-ROMs, spots on many scores of compilations, and quite a few independent releases.

Mister Vapor, a newer incarnation of Thomas Park, focuses especially on the hazier, foggier sides of ambient music.

Thomas is open for collaboration.

June 2, 2016, marks the 1000th broadcast of Galactic Travels. To celebrate, Robert Rich's landmark recording Perpetual - A Somnium Continuum will be played in only two parts. The first six hours will be played in a marathon broadcast and the remainder will be played later this month.

Perpetual is the eight hour follow up to the epic recording Somnium. As far as it is known, Somnium has received only one complete play on the radio and that was on Galactic Travels #211, broadcast on April 5, 2001.

Famous for his legendary Sleep Concerts, Robert Rich created both Somnium and Perpetual in the same vein. The idea is to let the music incorporate itself into your perceptual framework during the night, to create a sonic surround, an environment for unique states of consciousness.

This month's Special Focus is on a trilogy by Shane Morris and Mystified. You may read about Mystified in last month's Special Focus.

Shane Morris has spent most of his life exploring and cultivating sounds and their relationships. Inspired by nature, patterns, systems, and science, Morris weaves tribal rhythms, ethereal atmospheres, and digital electronica into mystic soundscapes that are rooted in traditions of the past while embracing contemporary technology. A solo musician since 2008, Shane Morris is a BMI recording artist with music released at Spotted Peccary/Lotuspike, Relaxed Machinery, and independently, as well as many releases licensed in Creative Commons.

Shane Morris is fluent with over 30 percussion instruments and numerous wind instruments from around the world and has been studying, performing, and recording for 25 years. Morris is also deeply involved in hardware and software synthesizers, digital processing, DiY electronics, generative systems, and field recordings, which are often combined with acoustic instruments in his works.

Apart from his solo works, Morris is a frequent collaborator both live and in-studio and worked with a number of artists including Mystified, Disturbed Earth, Dan Minoza, Palancar, Howard Moscovitz, Emerald Adrift, Pixyblink, Killerhaven, Modulator ESP, Kevin Kissinger, Q, Blue Hell, Jack Hertz, and Anton Mobin.

Morris received a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology and Music from Missouri State University with a particular interest in ritual music of the African diaspora. Continuing his studies in percussion, Morris took workshops at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Ma. with Giovanni Hidalgo and Jamie Haddad, Humboldt State University in Arcata, Ca. with Michael Spiro, Los Munequitos de Matanzas, and Howard Kaufman, and Raleigh, NC. with Mamady Keita.

Shane Morris' music is in regular rotation at Drone Zone at Soma FM, Stillstream, Electro-music, Astreaux world, and Zelest’s Asylum dot com radio stations. Morris has been featured on Hypnagogue, Sadayatana, Sounds of Ambience, Syndae, and Lost Frontier podcasts. Morris' music is also found on terrestrial FM radio programs in the U.S., such as Music with Space (Princeton, NJ), Innervisions (Berea, Kentucky), Night Tides (Kansas City, Mo.), Galactic Travels (Allentown, PA), Secret Music (Fishkill, NY), Alien Air Music (Los Angeles, Ca.), NightSounds (Abilene, TX), The Chestnut Tree (Houston, Tx), Thought Radio (Allentown, PA), and Star's End (Philadelphia, Pa.)

An avid live performer and improviser, Morris is also a regular at Electro-Music festivals and the former City Skies. Other performances include small venue and living room concerts, and live streaming internet concerts both solo and networking with other artists in real-time.

A lover of the long-form approach in live music, Shane segues all compositions together in a continuous immersive sound field during live sets. Morris uses live looping, sampling, and sequencing in his live sets which are approached with a loose compositional arrangement, creating a balance of improvisation and structure.

The Serbo-Croatian phrase "vidna obmana" means "optical illusion" which is why vidnaObmana chose it to be his musical personna. This indicates his willingness to try new processes, sounds, and musical styles. One of the top three most respected and prolific composers/performers in the ambient field, vidnaObmana's internationally acclaimed atmospheric soundscapes have made him a sought after performer and collaborator.

Currently performing under his own name, Dirk Serries, he has played locally at the Soundscapes Concert Series in 2003. He has also played a radio concert on Galactic Travels from the WDIY studios.

Asmus Tietchens has also recorded under the monikers Club of Rome and Hematic Sunsets. He is a German composer of avant-garde music who became interested in experimental music and musique concrète as a child. He began recording sound experiments in 1965 with electronic musical instruments, synthesizers, and tape loops. His early recordings consisted of accessible music, but in 1984, he began moving toward abstract music.

Modulator Experimental Synthesis Project (Modulator ESP) is Jez Creek from Nottingham in the UK. He performs improvised music that explores the boundaries of dark ambient, drone, Berlin School sequencing, and noise using modular synthesis, real-time sampling, sound manipulation, and live looping.

Modulator ESP has been described variously as "vintage synth overload to propel you into the outer reaches of the cosmos" and "one man will descend to (this) earth in a hail of analogue synth tones; called upon from the singular consciousness of John Carpenter and Vangelis - like a 2046 dystopian dream with the optimism of Jean Michael Jarre, and his penguins."

When Modulator ESP discovered that there was more to EM than TD, Jarre, Pickford and Shreeve by finding bands like Arc, RMI, Redshift, Airsculpture, and Arcane, bands that were doing a more retro-styled improvisational take on EM, it came as a revelation to him. One of the reasons he'd left the band he was in was because he wanted to do something a bit more freeform. He knew he still wanted to play live but without playing along to pre-programmed, structured backing tracks.

Things started to snowball when he discovered certain synthesizers, both hardware and software, step sequencing, and delay processors.

Modulator ESP loves playing synths because he loves the electronic, synthetic, other worldly nature of the sounds. This makes Ambient, Berlin School EM the best style for his interests. He plans to stretch the boundaries by incorporating some of his progressive influences.
