The Special Focus for January was
MODULATOR ESP

Modulator Experimental Synthesis Project (Modulator ESP) is Jez Creek from Nottingham in the UK. He performs improvised music that explores the boundaries of dark ambient, drone, Berlin School sequencing, and noise using modular synthesis, real-time sampling, sound manipulation, and live looping.

Modulator ESP has been described variously as "vintage synth overload to propel you into the outer reaches of the cosmos" and "one man will descend to (this) earth in a hail of analogue synth tones; called upon from the singular consciousness of John Carpenter and Vangelis - like a 2046 dystopian dream with the optimism of Jean Michael Jarre, and his penguins."

When Modulator ESP discovered that there was more to EM than TD, Jarre, Pickford and Shreeve by finding bands like Arc, RMI, Redshift, Airsculpture, and Arcane, bands that were doing a more retro-styled improvisational take on EM, it came as a revelation to him. One of the reasons he'd left the band he was in was because he wanted to do something a bit more freeform. He knew he still wanted to play live but without playing along to pre-programmed, structured backing tracks.

Things started to snowball when he discovered certain synthesizers, both hardware and software, step sequencing, and delay processors.

Modulator ESP loves playing synths because he loves the electronic, synthetic, other worldly nature of the sounds. This makes Ambient, Berlin School EM the best style for his interests.

RADIO MASSACRE INTERNATIONAL
Photo

Click on the name, photo, or logo above to visit the artist's website.

Radio Massacre International members include Steve Dinsdale (Keyboards, Electronics, Drums), Duncan Goddard (Keyboards, Electronics, Bass), and Gary Houghton (Guitar, Keyboards). Since 1993 they have been building a catalogue of epic electronic improvisations, distilled into permanent records by the wonders of digital editing.

After accumulating a library of 30 such pieces they finally released the double CD Frozen North in late 1995, and appeared live for the first time at the Emma festival in Sheffield. The band was also featured on the BBC's World Service, thus finding a truly international radio audience for the first time. RMI had a website long before it was obligatory, and this has enabled the forging of relationships with listeners, promoters and radio stations across the world.

RMI are veterans of TV, radio, and concert performances all over the UK, Europe, and the US.

DWELLER AT THE THRESHOLD
Photo

Dweller at the Threshold (DATT) was an electronic music band based in Portland, Oregon, from 1993 to 2005. The band lineup changed through the years but primarily consisted of Paul Ellis and Dave Fulton. Ellis left the band sometime after the third CD, Ouroborus, was released. 2004 saw the release of Full Boundary Condition and Passenger 4. The former was a three disk box set that contained the first two DATT CDs remastered and a third disk of a live performance of the band after Ouroborus was released, while the latter was a collaborative effort with the Dutch group Free System Projekt.

Dweller at the Threshold was one of the few US based electronic music bands to have performed in the Berlin School style of electronic music. The band has performed internationally at electronic music festivals and on both the east and west coasts of the United States. DATT has received national airplay on PRI's Echoes, XM radio, and Hearts of Space.

The photo above includes Dave Fulton, John Duval, and Lon Cudy. When I knew the band, DATT consisted of Paul, Dave, and John. Click this banner for the Special Focus listing on WDIY's website.

AMBIENTLIVE

John Sherwood is the labelhead at AmbientLive. Originally associated with the Awakenings Concert Series in the UK, AmbientLive has released a number of compilation albums which are available at its Bandcamp account.

In 2005, John booked artists for the Awakenings concert series and asked them if they wanted a track on an album. The track submitted was the choice of the artist or band. John arranged the running order and matched the volume levels.

The Special Focus for June is
BERNHARD WÖSTHEINRICH
Photo

Click on the name, photo, or logo above to visit the artist's website.

Bernhard Wöstheinrich is a sound artist, improviser, and painter living in Berlin who elicits meaning from abstraction in electronic music and painting. He has studied graphic design and has created an eclectic body of work in both graphics and music.

The alter ego, "The Redundant Rocker," was created around 2002 and it finally established itself with the release of "Collider." Since then, the monicker co-existed with and influenced Bernhard's other diverse projects. You may find Redundant Rocker music under the names "Bernhard" and "Bernhard Wöstheinrich" as well and the other way around. The name, "The Redundant Rocker" ironically alludes to a certain kind of replaceability in modern art and music. With today's technology, anyone could easily be replaced with a drum (or coffee) machine. The person behind The Redundant Rocker, Bernhard Wöstheinrich, is a composer, painter, graphic designer, performer, small town bohemian, failed control freak, and even a record label owner. His projects and albums have been released on a variety of labels and span different fields of electronic and ambient music.

Bernhard has played on Galactic Travels™ as half of Centrozoon with Markus Reuter (Tu-Ner, the Stick Men, et al) as well as a solo artist.

THANECO
Photo

Click on the name, photo, or logo above to visit the artist's website.

THANECO is the moniker for a music project by Thanasis Oikonomopoulos of Patras, Greece, a composer of ambient and berlin-school electronic music. He has produced a few dozen albums, some in collaboration with other musicians such as Steve Hillman (UK), DASK (UK), and Romerium (The Netherlands). Using other names like "Thomas Ikon" and "Winter People," he has worked on other music projects including having co-written an album with the Progressive Psychedelic Greek band "The Flow."

Thaneco studied music composition and piano performance at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree. He returned to Patras to work as a piano tutor at Polymnio Odeum, a private music school founded by his mother Hronoula Bonanou, and as a piano and music theory teacher in many other Greek public music schools.

Today he works as a piano teacher in the "Eleni Karaindrou" music school of Amfissa and continues to write more albums in his home studio in Patras where he uses modular synthesizers, vintage analogue synthesizers, and computer applications.

MAX CORBACHO
Photo

Click on the name, photo, or logo above to visit the artist's website.

Max Corbacho is an independent electronic music artist born in 1966 in the vast, open landscapes of southwestern Spain. The solitude of these sprawling plains, the infinite starry skies, and the deep silence of the night have imprinted themselves onto his sonic creations, shaping his immersive soundworlds.

His work is a journey into hypnotic ambient, space music, drone, and dark ambient, crafting dense, slow-moving textures that dissolve time and space. Drawing inspiration from the pioneering depths of Steve Roach, as well as the meditative expanses of Robert Rich, Vidna Obmana, and Alio Die, Corbacho’s music unfolds as a contemplative exploration of the ineffable, a gateway to the sublime.

Emerging from early experiments with guitar and rock bands, his artistic evolution led him toward electronic music, where he found his true voice. In 1999, he released his debut album which was acclaimed as one of the finest space-ambient works of its time. This marked the beginning of a prolific career, with subsequent releases further establishing his signature sound, a fusion of ethereal drones, celestial harmonics, and subterranean vibrations.

Max Corbacho's music resonates with those who seek immersive, transportive soundscapes, where the boundaries between space music, ambient, and dark ambient blur into a singular, transcendent experience.
